Grade 1 Term 3 Highlights

1B dressed up for Book Week.

Literacy week1A dressed up for Book Week

We had a wonderful Literacy Week 30 July – 3 Aug, with different events each day, including Dress-up day, the book fair, a talk from author Sue Whiting, a visit by Clifford, and our family-reading morning. Thanks to all of the parents who came to read with our children after assembly on Aug 3.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic is about Light and Sound. Children have turned on their listening ears and opened their eyes wide as they’ve learned how to describe light, sound and where they come from. It was wonderful to see and hear all of the light and sound objects students shared in their Chatterbox presentations.

In a few weeks, we will be learning about Mini-Beasts. For this Inquiry unit, we will visit the Melbourne Museum on Thursday, 13 September. Each class is looking for two parent volunteers to accompany us there. If you are interested in volunteering your time there is a sign-up sheet on the Grade 1 noticeboard.

Behaviour outside

Unfortunately, we’ve noticed there have been some challenges in the yard regarding playing nicely and safely outside.  In Wellbeing sessions, we have been talking about feelings and emotions, and remembering and thinking about those feelings in order to have empathy.

We encourage you to talk with your children about safe and inclusive ways to play, and to talk about empathy.

We also have a number of lunchtime clubs to help build students’ social skills and increase engagement during play time:

  • Tuesdays: French Club
  • Every other Wednesday: Science Club
  • Thursdays: Junior School Choir, and Veranda Club (toys and games on the Grade 1 concrete veranda)
  • Friday: Arts and Craft Club

Literacy

Children have spent the last few weeks reading and writing poems. Take a look in each classroom for displays of their great acrostics or colour poems.

We are now starting informative texts. Children will write their own informative booklet about a mini-beast — watch out for information about our celebration of their learning later in the Term.
