Grade 3 and 4 hard at work in the garden!

Over the past few weeks the Grade 3 and 4 students have been working very hard to prepare our Garden beds to plant an array of vegetables for our Kitchen Garden. Under the knowledgeable eye of Sebastian Beck, the students have  learnt to how to carefully handle and care for these plants, to ensure they have the best chance of growing healthy and flourishing vegetables. The lessons have been closely linked with both the Grade 3 and 4 Biological science units, exploring the features that make something living or non living. The students have also created a wicking garden bed for their classrooms. These inside gardens allow students to see how soil absorbs water like a sponge. The wicking bed uses an upside down watering system whereby the water sits at the bottom of the garden, supported by a bed of rocks. Sebastian Beck is currently on leave for four week therefore our weekly gardening sessions will be postponed until he returns. However, the students will be caring for both the inside and outside gardens and linking their practical experiences to their Biological science units.
