NAIDOC Week Celebrations

To launch the NAIDOC week celebrations, we will be having a special assembly this Friday the 14th of June. Boon Wurrung Elders Janet Galpin and David Tournier will perform a ‘Welcome to Country’ and ‘Smoking Ceremony’. This is a very important event and all members of the school community are encouraged to attend. In the event of poor weather the assembly will be held in the school hall.

During NAIDOC week celebrations students will be participating in activities in their respective year levels. They will also be playing Indigenous Games in grade level sport. Students can also purchase a ticket to the Staff vs. Students Game of Edor, which will be held on the 20th of June at 2:40pm, for a gold coin donation. Tickets can be purchased from their classroom teacher.

In addition, there will also be the ‘Great Book Swap’. Students can bring a gold coin donation and exchange it for one of the amazing second hand children’s books. These books have been kindly donated by members of the school community. The books include Tom Gates and Anh Do books, Pig the Pug and Goosebumps (and many more).

All funds raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This organisation are doing great work supplying culturally appropriate books to 280 remote communities. They also run Early Literacy Programs to encourage reading in children under 5 and encouraging their parents and carers to get involved. In addition, they have also published 88 books, some in Indigenous languages, written by community members with the support of renowned Australian authors and illustrators.
