PE/Sports Update

25 students had a wonderful time at the Southport District Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 28 Feb at the Prahran Pool. To start the day, we had Gia, Marli, Saffron and Ivy compete in the Girls Open 4x50m Medley Relay, followed by the Boys Open 4x50m Medley Relay with a formidable team of Max, Lars, Felix and Will. These teams did very well, considering they are grade 4 and 5 students competing in an open age group (unfortunately Grade 6’s were not competing due to Canberra camp). We had Ivy, Lars, Gia, Will and Hudson competing in the 50 metre freestyle individual event. Special mention to Will and Gia who won their heat and Ivy and Lars who came 2nd.  Next up we had the backstroke events, with Saffron, Max, Gia, Will, Daisy and Luca representing our school. Well done to Will and Max who came first and Gia and Daisy who came second in their heat.

In the 50 metre breaststroke event we had Marli, Lars, Daisy, Felix, Zoe Rose and Luca swimming. Marli, Lars and Daisy placed second in their heat and Felix won his heat.

We had Marli, Max, Ivy, Felix, Poppy and Harvey represent us in the 50 metre butterfly race. It is a notoriously technically skilled stroke and I was particularly proud of Harvey and Poppy who raced in age groups above as they were the next quickest swimmers in the absence of our grade 6s. Also, well done to Felix who swam the entire races despite his goggles coming off on his dive entry and managed to win the race. Well done to Max who also finished first in his heat.

Finally, we had the 4 x 50 metre freestyle aged races and we managed to meet with a great deal of success! In the Girls 9/10 years 4x50m Freestyle Relay we had Ivy, Saffron, Marli and Zoe Rose who placed 2nd in their heat. Well done to both the Boys 9/10 years and the Boys 11 4x50m Freestyle Relay teams which included Lars, Harvey, Lucas L, Haydon and Will, Felix, Hudson, Hugo, which both came first in their heats. Gia, Daisy, Poppy and Molly also swam well in the girls 11s and in the boys 12/13 we had James, Apollo, Luca and Archie.

Because we have so many schools in our district, it is the times from the heats that are considered in order to determine which teams go through to the next level which is the Beachside Division Carnival which will be held at the Oakleigh Pool on Friday 8 March.

Because Carla D in grade 6 swam a state qualifying time at our House Carnival and Hannah D swam within half a second of that, I’m in a position to apply for her and the girls 12/13 relay team to have special consideration as they may be eligible to swim at the Division Carnival on Friday March 8. I will find out the outcome of this shortly.

Thanks to all the parents that helped on the day, like Nikki, Liz, Dora, Sara, Matt and Sarah and also to the parents who could drop in for parts of the day. Thank you to Mr Yardney who walked the students to the venue and ensured students were marshaling at the right time as I was setting up and announcing on the day.  The district carnival is a great day where approximately 10% of the top swimmers from the 4000 student in our area compete and our students did us very proud with their efforts in the pool!
