School History
Toorak Primary School has a rich history dating back to 1890 when the school was first built.
1880— Purchase of land, cnr of Canterbury Rd and Brookville Rd.
1890— School officially opened 9th of June.
1890— During August buildings were completed.
1891— Area severely flooded.
1902— Sloyd room commenced. Classes also held on Saturday mornings at a cost of one pence.
1916— Classes held in local halls and pavilion classrooms whilst extensions and remodelling were carried out.
1919— Flu epidemic. Central classes operated. Science room fitted out for the central classes.
1926— Average attendance 400.
1930— Introduction of House system: Hinkler – Yellow, Kingsford – Red, Monash – Green, Nelson – Blue.
1937— Australian Boys Choir formed from Toorak Central Boys’ Choir.
1942— Invasion of New Guinea, trenches were dug and air raid drills were practised in Brookville Gardens.
1948— Average enrolment 580.
1955— School heating changed from wood to gas.
1956— Mothers’ Club first formed.
1964— Original slate roof of main building removed and replaced with tiles.
1969— Arts Room opened at a cost of $10,000 provided by the Mothers’ Club and Government.
1986— Renovations to main building completed.
1988— Final year of central classes.
