Sports Update

Cricket Grant
Last week we welcomed Patrick Callaghan and Simon Sinclair who are representatives from Cricket Victoria. Each Tuesday, for the next three weeks they will be providing coaching during our PE lessons courtesy of the Sporting Schools grant. Patrick is an opening bowler for East Oakleigh and Simon played for England’s Under 19 team. So far they have focused on teaching points for bowling and batting.

We have also just received $1000 worth of new cricket equipment (sandpaper not included!), which will be a big asset to our sporting program. We are happy to report, that our old equipment will not go into landfill but will go to regional and remote areas of Northern India via the Bats for Bhadohi initiative for other students to enjoy.

Beachside Division Swimming Carnival
Well done to our students who progressed through to the Beachside Division Swimming Carnival last Friday. Max swam in the 50 metre butterfly, Felix swam in the 50 metre breaststroke, Carla swam in the 50 metre freestyle events and Carla, Hannah, Kim and Izabela swam in the 4 x 50 metre freestyle relay. Felix placed second in his heat, Carla came 5th overall and the girls placed 7th overall in the relay. Well done for representing our school at such a high level.

Cross Country preparation
Cross Country will take place in the first couple of weeks of term two (dates tbc). The 3-6s event will take place at Orrong Reserve (running the same course as the 2018 Fun Run or 2kms for 8/9/10/11s and 3kms for 12/13s) and the P-2 Cross Country will take place on Brookville Gardens (students running approximately 4 laps of the oval or 800 metres). In PE, we have discussed that now is a great time to start building stamina, aerobic fitness and endurance for this gruelling event!

Student Leadership
I look forward to taking a number of senior Toorak Primary leaders to the Halogen National Young Leaders Day on Monday 18 March. It is the largest student leadership event run in Melbourne with around 4000 students attending. It comes highly recommended, with prominent speakers throughout the day. More information can be found at halogen.org.au.

Swimming – Preps and 1/2 classes
Swimming lessons for Yr 1 and 2 students will now take place early in term two at Klim Swim, Richmond. Grade Ones will take place in term 2, weeks 2 & 3, from Monday 29th April to Friday 10th May. Grade Twos will take place in term 2, weeks 4 & 5, from Monday 13th May to Friday 24th May (excluding the 15th of May, an additional date with be scheduled, date tbc). Later in the year the Preps will be swimming on Wednesdays and more information will follow in the coming week.

Last week when it was 37 degrees and far too hot to have preps running around in a PE lesson we decided to go for a walk around the school and then drink  iced water in the shade. This was something we did regularly whilst I was working in Darwin as a teacher and I’m glad it is just as much as a hit at TPS!
