Sports Update

P-2 Cross Country
We had a wonderful turn out of parents at the P-2 Cross Country Carnival last week. Thank-you for supporting our students and celebrating their achievements! It was a great effort by students to run 800 metres whilst still in the junior school. Thank-you also to the teachers and house leaders who helped run the day and congratulations to those students who were awarded ribbons. I was thrilled to receive a number of letters from some prep students who wrote to tell me how much they enjoyed the day.

TPS Soccer and Mixed Netball Team
On Friday 31 May TPS played in a grade 5/6 soccer and mixed netball competition at Port Melbourne Primary School against schools in our district. We had Brody, Hugo, Alliaya, Hunar, Remy, Sybilla, Camilla and Ava in our team. The team got considerably better throughout the day and both won and lost games. A very special mention to Camilla and Ava, both of whom love netball and took the initiative to run some training sessions and organise positions for the team. We did well considering a number of our players hadn’t played netball before.
The TPS soccer team was made up of Mobin, Conor, Adam, Charlie F, Charlie H, Felix, Oscar, Jimmy, Arron, Johnny, Oliver and Jeremy. The playing ground was a full pitch and much larger than Brookville Gardens, where they had been training. The team adapted to their opponents in the first game however lost the it five to nil. The second team that TPS played against was South Yarra where they played with Felix as the goalkeeper. They won the game one to nil with Charlie F scoring the only goal. Toorak came runners up for the day. Thanks to Peter Meares for coaching on the day and Jeremy for researching the most suitable structures and working out the positions of each player to reach the best possible outcome for our team.

Tommy Lahiff Cup
We have entered a 5/6 boys AFL team in the Tommy Lahiff Cup to be played on Thursday June 27 in Port Melbourne. The team is being coached by Mr Chapman who plays for Prahran Assumption and are training each Friday lunchtime. Our Curriculum Day is on the same day as the girls’ comp but fortunately they had the opportunity to play last year whereas the boys team didn’t.

5/6 AFL Gala Day
The 5/6 students will compete against schools in our district at Fawkner Park on Thursday June 13. A modified non-contact version of AFL will be played.

Students versus Teachers Edor Game
We are very excited to host a teachers versus students game of Edor on Thursday 20 June on Brookville Gardens just after lunch at 2:40pm, all parents are welcome. This is to commence NAIDOC Week which celebrates the history and cultures of Indigenous Australia. Edor is a chasing and tagging game that is widely played in the Northern Territory and I learnt it whilst I was working in Arnhem Land in 2017. In 2018 I introduced the game to all students at TPS and it is a very popular game indeed…rivalling the likes of basketball!

Beachside Division
We had five students represent TPS at the Beachside Division Cross Country Carnival last week. Congratulations to Josie 8th, Katya, 28th, Luca 24th, Hannah 40th and Charlie (DNF due to injury) who represented us at Bald Hill Park. We wish Josie well when she competes at the next level in Hastings in mid-June.

SSV
Josie (basketball), Jayziah (basketball) and Matilda (hockey) have all made it to the final stages of the SSV selection for the state teams. We wish them well for their final trials and congratulate them getting to this stage!

Tennis – State Finals
Dimitri’s tennis competition was a washout on Friday May 31 so we look forward to hearing when the games will be rescheduled.

Haydon Tennis
Haydon has spent the last few weekends doing the tryouts for Tennis Australia Super 10’s. There were 150 people who were eligible to tryout for only 24 spots.  The Super 10’s is the best 10 year olds in Victoria that play in a squad in team and individual events, which is the highest level you can reach at that age.  A big congratulations to Haydon who was successful in getting in! Not only that but he was the youngest boy in the group. This is great achievement that has taken a lot of determination, practice and dedication.
