A Change of Seasons

We are slowly nearing the end of summer and a change of seasons is just around the corner. This is when it gets busy in our garden: we pick the last of the summer produce, select the strongest plants for saving seed and start a compost pile with the old plants. This week’s sustainability class is all about seed saving and the importance of preserving seed for coming generations.

Seeds are living links in an unbroken chain reaching all the way back to a time to when our stone-age ancestors began identifying and domesticating food plants with the simple act of selecting seed for replanting. Seed collecting and saving is a beautiful way for our budding gardeners to learn about this important history and continue the chain for future generations to come. With this simple act, our students become part of that history and the future!
