Joyeux Noel et bonnes vacances à tous ! Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all !
Students have been practising the Carol they will be singing at the school’s carol night and engaging in various activities related to this celebratory time of year. The way it is celebrated varies slightly in each region. In Northern France, the tress (le sapin) is not decorated until Christmas Eve. In the Alps, a shepherd brings sheep into the church during midnight mass. The customary cake for the French is the very delicious “Bûche de Noël”.
Noël or Christmas is widely celebrated in France as it is in Australia. The difference is that it is Winter ( l’hiver) in France and Summer (l’été) in Australia. It is customary to wish one another ‘ Joyeux Noël’ and to give family and friends “ les bisous or bises” ( a kiss on each cheek). It is also customary to wish everyone “ une bonne année”- a happy New Year.
