Grade 2 Homework

Dear Parents,

We have had quite a bit of feedback in recent weeks regarding the amount and style of homework that is being sent home in grade 2. We have listened to this feedback and after much consultation have decided to simplify some of our expectations.

Each week the students will be expected to read 15 minutes a night for a minimum of four nights. Journal entries about the books read are greatly encouraged. The children will also be set weekly individualised spelling lists and a variety of activities that will assist them to memorise the words.

“Talk Homework” to support the Big Write task will be sent home regularly as a speaking and listening prompt and will require not writing at home. Real life problem solving tasks in Mathematics will also be provided as a suggestion and guide on a regular basis.

Mathletics and Literacy Planet tasks will still be set for students to complete but are not compulsory. However they will complement the learning occurring in the grade during that particular week. There will be some opportunities to do these tasks in class but, especially with Mathematics, most of the learning occurring in class requires concrete materials and so the use of this program will not be a regular occurrence.

Whilst it may suit some families to complete the tasks over the weekend we do not expect homework to be finished during this time. It is important that the children and their families have opportunities to rest, relax and enjoy time together.

Please see your classroom teacher if you need clarification regarding the set tasks as they are more than willing to offer their assistance.
