Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

We have recently received notification of a confirmed case of Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) in Prep. Whilst cases are limited, it is important for you to be aware of the symptoms. Please ensure you inform the school if your child presents with any of the below symptoms.

HFMD usually begins with:

  • Fever
  • vesicular lesions on the buccal surfaces of the cheeks, gums and sides of the tongue, beginning as small red spots that blister and often become ulcers.
  • Papulovesicular lesions of the palms, fingers and soles commonly occur over a 1–2-day period. Occasionally, maculopapular lesions appear on the knees, elbows, buttocks and genital area.

Diagnosis is usually clinical so important to see your GP.

The incubation period is usually 3-7 days and children must stay away from school until the lesions/blisters have dried.

This brings up the importance and reminder of good hand washing. Please support children with this at home and we will do what we can here at school by making sure students always have access to water and soap and encouraging them to wash their hands regularly.
