Chickenpox (Varicella)

We have recently received notification of a confirmed case of Chickenpox in Grade 5. Whilst cases are limited, it is important for you to be aware of the symptoms.

Chicken Pox usually begins with:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Followed by a generalised rash a day or so later.
  • Rashes start as itchy red spots but rapidly progress to blisters.

Chickenpox is infectious 2 days prior to the onset of the rash until the blisters have all crusted into scabs. This is usually about 5 days after they appear. Children must not attend school during this time.

Please also note that pregnant women and newborn babies should not be exposed to people with active chickenpox.
