Sports Update

Softball/Tee-ball Training
Softball and Tee-ball training is in full swing on the oval most lunchtimes. A big thank you to Josie and Andy Patterson who train the students. We are very lucky to have Josie assist us; she was previously a coach who trained students to a State championship and specialises in pitching and throwing. Thanks for working with the students to help improve their technique. The competition is in term three so students will be most prepared. It’s great to see such enthusiasm in the lead up to the competition.

SSV
We wish Jayziah and Sam good luck as they prepare for the next selection round of the SSV State sporting teams. Jayziah will participate in the basketball camp over the holidays and Sam is onto the next round for soccer.

Indigenous Sports in PE to celebrate National Reconciliation Week
To celebrate National Reconciliation Week, students learnt about Traditional Indigenous Games in PE last week called E’Dor and Kalkadoon Kee’an, both which focused on components of fitness including speed and agility and hand-eye coordination. I was very lucky to learn Edor when I was working in Arnhem Land and it has been very popular with the 3-6 students! These games led nicely to touch football (for the 5/6 gala day) and throwing events for the start of the athletics unit. It was great that students recognised these skills which are useful and transferable to many sports.

Touch Football
Students in grades 5 and 6 participated in the Interschool Touch Football Gala day last week, in freezing conditions! Thanks to the staff and parents that attended.

Basketball
A special mention and thanks to Stuart Burriss for his commitment to Basketball at our school. There is barely a morning or afternoon that goes by where Stuart and his many parent associate coaches are out training for basketball, like this morning, where there were four groups of students training! It takes much dedication and effort to lead such a developed program, over many years, which has established Toorak Primary School’s very strong basketball reputation and our community is all the better for it. Thanks Stuart!

AFL
We got a visit from Michael Hibberd, Bernie Vince, Jeff Garlett, Clayton Oliver and Bayley Fritsch from the Melbourne Football Club yesterday. The MFC players kicked the footy with 60 of our students at lunchtime. Thank you to Merve for helping organise the session!
