Thursday, Ross, from the Prahran Rotary Club, comes to help in the Grade 3B classroom and is greeted warmly and fondly by the class. Ross has been volunteering at Toorak Primary School for over 2 years.
Ross helps out individual students and small groups in all areas of literacy including their expression and fluency as they read aloud, their punctuation and grammar in their writing, their spelling, publishing, handwriting and presentation. Ross is enthusiastic and shows genuine care for the students.
A child in the class commented that ‘before Ross came to TPS I was nervous about public speaking and presenting my work. Ross told me I should be very proud of my reading and writing and he gave me confidence to speak at the writing celebrations night.’
In addition, another student said that he owes his improvement in his handwriting to Ross from a one on one conference they had where Ross had encouraged the student to take time and care when writing. Ross shares stories with the students and gives them all great advice, not only academically but socially and emotionally as well.
It has been a pleasure having Ross in the classroom, he has contributed to the students’ improvement, wellbeing and success.
Ross and The Prahran Rotary Club have asked Toorak Primary School to promote a fundraising event that they are currently running, showing the movie ‘The Intern,’ starring Anne Hathaway and Robert Di Niro at Como Cinema, South Yarra, on the 30th of September.
All funds raised at this event will aid the construction of toilets at a secondary school in India, where currently no operating toilets are provided, causing many adolescent girls in the district, to miss school. Improving sanitation, also improves girls’ security and educational outcomes.
